AZN Collective Magazine

AZN Collective focuses on embracing Asian culture and identity, hoping to promote to a younger, mature audience the many underground talents of the selected represented creatives. This magazine strives to give recognition to a handful of Asian designers, musicians, and influencers; this zine includes in-depth interviews with artists and serves as a platform for their individual hard work and inspiration.

Sketches

Sketches were completed after interviewing with my 7 participants via Zoom and being granted their permission to use their art in the publication.

Each spread belongs to the featured creative(s), alongside their own works, a quote, and an article. The vision was that one portrait take up a majority of the whole page.

Version 1

I composed all assets into a rough draft in InDesign, attempting to stay true to what arranged the portrait and their respective works in unison. The word content and most creative’s portraits were completed.

Version 2

After the first round of critiques, revisions were made to include finalized portraits, implementation of different type pairings, and properly corrected word content.

Version 2 of Isne's featured spread, more refined to showcase all the different works he's done.

Result

After just slight revising, minor adjustments were made to the previous versions to create the final version which was printed out for distributing.

Prototype

A website prototype was also created in Adobe XD to showcase how the branding would appear digitally. The website offers a store page for the magazine, a section highlighting each creative uniquely online as it did in the editorial, and an about/contact section.

Insight

  • Organizing and interviewing scheduled creatives was a challenging, yet fun process; capturing each individual’s statements and minimizing to concise word content was difficult.

  • Consistency throughout spreads (while also remaining true to the directive style) took some time to adapt to and included many iterations.

  • Creating the art in a timely fashion and incorporating them into the editorial design was a risky challenge, but proven to be fun and a testament to my skills.
